History of Sikkim
Sikkim's story goes back centuries when the Lepcha people lived alongside Tibetan settlers. In the 1600s, the Namgyal dynasty rose to power, building a strong Sikkim kingdom. The region faced much rivalry between Nepal and Bhutan until the state was annexed by the British East India Company in 1888. After India's independence, the state of Sikkim was later joined as the 22nd state of India in 1975.
Geography and Climate
Placed beautifully in the Himalayas, the state of Sikkim boasts a compact 7,096 sq km area with over 67% of its land under verdant forests. The state receives an average rainfall of 2,739 mm annually, but varies greatly. South Sikkim enjoys a subtropical climate, while the north transforms into a cold desert with snow-capped peaks, experiencing much lower rainfall and freeing climatic conditions.
People and Culture
Sikkim's rich culture is majorly developed by three main ethnic groups: the Lepchas, Bhutia, and Nepalese who have been here for centuries. Nepali is the most common language, while Lepcha and Bhutia languages also hold great cultural significance. The state's livelihood highly depends on agriculture, with terraced farming and the cultivation of cardamom being the most popular ones. Tourism also plays a growing role in generating revenue for the state with visitors drawn to the stunning scenery and diverse cultural experiences.

Sikkim's cuisine reflects its diverse population. Rice is the staple diet which is mostly served with meat stews or curries. How to Reach Sikkim?
Air : Sikkim is well connected with the rest of Indian states with airways, Pakyong Airport is the sole airport located at a distance of 27 km from the city of Gangtok.
Train : To date, there is no rail route in Sikkim, although a construction for railway track is under process that will connect the state via Sevoke railway station. New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the closest active railway station located at a distance of 140km.
Road : National Highway 10 or NH 10 is the only major highway that can be used to travel to Sikkim from another state of the country.
